Ebay founder Pierre Omidyar uses his philanthropic investment fund as a force for sustainable social change around the world. Omidyar Network needed a digital partner to better communicate with and inspire its portfolio organizations.
Improving event attendance and interaction
Each year the Omidyar Network hosts a forum in silicon valley for the CEOs, Executive Directors and Senior Leadership of the organizations within its investment portfolio. These leaders come from all over the world in order to network and collaborate over the three-day event.
BRINK was approached to develop a digital strategy to promote the forum, better connect the attendees with one another, better organize and simplify the event planning process and elevate the creativity and professionalism of the materials. Central to the initiative was the development of a custom mobile application which would serve as a replacement for the thick conference booklets given out in years past, with additional features only possible through the power of digital.
In addition to having user and organization profiles (all handled via a custom registration process distributed via email), the HTML5 event app had a session signup process, a custom agenda, live survey and polling features and an easy way for users to contact one another and schedule meetings.
Our work for the event also included the development of a logo and styling, designing a registration site and email templates, designing event signage, building a live digital display that included real-time tweets, bulletins and attendee quotes and providing on-site support and video shooting.
In the end, we helped the Omidyar Network fully reach its attendance goals and efficiently disseminate information to attendees leading up to each event. The event app was used by at least 85% of attendees and received across-the-board high praise on a post-conference survey.
Repurposing the app
After the success of the 2012 Executive Forum, BRINK repurposed the online registration procedures and custom event app for a variety of other events for the Omidyar Network including the African Entrepreneurship Summit, Open Up! in London and the 2013 Executive Forum. Each time the materials were custom branded and adjusted to meet the unique needs of the event.
Launching new initiatives
Beyond event marketing, in 2012 we helped launch the website for a new organization close to Pierre's heart: the Democracy Fund. Their mission is to “invest in social entrepreneurs working to ensure that our political system is responsive to the public and able to meet the greatest challenges facing our nation.” An ambitious organization that needed a clean, CMS-driven website to tell their story.
We designed and developed a responsive site that looked great on mobile, tablet and desktop devices. The aesthetics had a uniquely American / democratic feel without being jingoistic. The site architecture favored a narrative approach that minimized clicks for the user while delivering a large amount of information in an easy to follow format. The blog was easy to administer on the backend and simplistic, yet robust, in its features so that the Democracy Fund staff could actively weigh in on important issues.
