BIOGRAPHY
I have been playing music since before I was seven years old. I would
take my Dad's guitar and tune it to open tunings that sounded good to
my ear and strum on the strings for hours. Then I got a snare drum.
What were they thinking!?!
I started singing in choir when I was seven and started playing the
trombone when I was nine. I had wonderful music teachers (What?! They
used to have music teachers in schools?) and my father was a natural
harmony singer and guitar strummer with a penchant for old folk and
outlaw country.
Later I was involved in every kind of school band project (performing
classical, jazz, you name it) or musical/theater projects I could get
into. At fifteen I discovered punk rock. The bass guitar became my
weapon of choice, then the drum kit. Years later after moving to
Athens, OH. I got into bluegrass music and the upright bass.
These days my main gig is with my buddy Catfish in the Paranormals. I do a lot of side-guy type gigs - trombone, bass, drums and harmony vocals are the most asked for service from me. I love it.
Currently I am hosting two Open Stages in Athens: Monday night at
Jackie O's (formerly O'Hooley's) where I get to work on my guitar
playing and singing, and Tuesday nights at the Blue Gator with Catfish where we have honed the Paranormals into a very entertaining act.
Some of the bands I have performed (still perform) in over the years
include: White Lizard Punk, Boy Picture (always hated that name),
Infants of Sin, Giant, Pica Huss,
Hairless Wurm, Bargoyle, Catheter Hepburn, Scarecrow Trio, Joe Bob
Billy and the Texas Alien, Misprints, Voodoo Birds, Nightbirds,
Catbirds (sense a theme?), the Royales, the Paranormals, Headwaters,
the Hutchison Brothers, the Hutchisons, Carter Stanley's Brain, the
Altered Boys, New Gospel Rangers, Slim Pickins, Renaissance Cowboys,
GC/DC, Mudhill Ramblers, Sarah Guthrie and the Athens County Ruffians,
Liz Pahl and the Pahlbearers, and numerous other projects that never
quite had a name, or had names that I have forgotten.
