ok...you all get spared from my meandering descriptions in this...the dreaded chapter three of my "series". there's been so much already said about leonard knight and his colorful creation, that i figure you can google his name or "slab city" and get pages and pages of info if you're so inclined. but i tend to think my pictures are slightly more interesting.

and so we move on...upon entering the "city limits", slab city appears to be a hodgepoge of random rv's, rusty, weathered junk, and desperate squatters. truth told, there is a butttload of that here for sure, but theres also a lot of community pride in this rustic, sprawling settlement. not to mention some damn pricey diesel motorhomes as well. take the time to root around and you will find the oasis club, the "loners on wheels" rv singles group, lizard tree library, a few churches, and even a large outdoor stage and "night club" that they have christened "the range". i was going to hang around and join in the open mike night (theres always an acoustic in the back of the zogmobile) but this was friday afternoon and the festivities take place every saturday. next time.
in closing, i've gotta say that i wonder about the folks that are left behind when the self-sufficient "snowbirds" head to cooler northern climes. praise the niland post office and the welfare checks. still, it gets pretty freakin' toasty and sparse come around july...
