The City of Washington, in the District of Columbia, (no it’s not a state and that is totally bogus and we’re going to just have to do something about #dcstatehood) recently, barely, survived a record-setting streak of cold rainy days that really put a damper on May flowers. Locals likened it to a “Purple Rain” in tribute to the recent death of Prince. Others we’re just really, really, over it already.

So with great fanfare Memorial Day Weekend arrived with better weather, bringing out the sun and serving as the unofficial kickoff to Summer 2016. Of course, there is still a bit of rain in the forecast, and the spectre of spiking humidity remains, but our region LOVES this season and there are an enormous amount of planned activities, events and concerts to celebrate.

For those looking, here’s just a bit of what’s cooking this DC summer:

  • AFI DOCS is a national film festival highlighting the best documentary filmmakers from both the US and around the world. This year the fest is June 22-26, and if you ever needed an excuse to visit Silver Spring, the AFI Silver Theater with the potential to see Werner Herzog and Spike Lee in the house may just be it.
  • The official Capital Fringe Festival takes place July 7-31. Expect the normal amount of local theater community productions, a spectrum of awe-inspiring talent and mind-bending improv, from black box to big box, and all in-between. Having celebrated their 10th Anniversary last year, this year they are introducing the first annual Capital Fringe Music Festival as a prelude, arriving June 25-26.
  • Fort Reno may have taken a year off thanks to the city being a doofus and Amanda Mackaye not standing for that shit, but are back to rock our collective granola birkenstocks with funk and bucolic punk. Shows will be happening in July as always on Mondays and Thursdays. Music is 7 to 9:30 PM but “the park is open for folks to be present for the pre-show festivities which will include cleaning the park and loading gear; the perfect backdrop for your dining experience.” Get it.

What am I myself getting into? Well, I’m pretty keen on hiking, climbing, and hammocking the great Shenandoah River Valley. May get some swimming in, of course. As always, bikes and outdoor booze too, so really, we all have no excuse to stay inside.

Here’s to DC summer!
