Decisions, Decisions..... Food or Fur? (I chose fur.....) A home-baked treat for your best four-legged pal.
You will need:
1 cup all purpose flour 1 cup wheat flour 1/2 cup powdered dry milk 1/2 cup wheat germ 1/2 teaspoon salt 6 Tablespoons margarine or shortening 1 egg 1 teaspoon brown sugar 1 cup mashed or pureed vegetables, for flavor, variety and color
Combine the flours, the wheat germ, powdered milk and salt in a large bowl. Cut in the shortening until mixture resembles corn meal. Beat the brown sugar with the egg, then stir the sugar & egg mixture into the flour mixture. Add teh mashed or pureed veggies gradually to make a stiff dough.
Knead dough on a floured surface until dough is smooth and pliable. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into shapes, using either a knife, or cookie cutters.
Bake at 325 degrees until lightly brown, which is about 30 minutes.
Makes about 2 dozen dog biscuits.
**If you decide not to use a cup of vegetables in your recipe, substitute water, and add the water gradually as necessary to make a stiff dough.
