In 1992 I served a year as SELF APPOINTED ARTIST IN RESIDENCE TO THE A MOUNTAIN HOMELESS ENCAMPMENT. I made a quonset hut out of pallets and stocked it with books from the library dumpster. Steve Leal gave me an old lawn mower and I made a dummy and set it on an exercycle pushing the lawn mower. I planted grass in the dummy and named him "ART". When the cops asked who lived in the quonset hut, the campers all said, "Art". I did concerts with my one man band and did drawings of the campers. The encampment looked like a 1930's "Hooverville". I loved it but the city was embarrassed by it and had it bulldozed.
