Lost River-lost Coast

We spent the last few days up along the Russian River. When I was much younger, I rode a bicycle from Sacramento up into Sonoma County then down along the river to the ocean and eventually across the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco. Not a bad way to spend a spring break. I never forgot that river and camping in those redwoods. I'd heard astonishing stories of huge salmon and steehead runs and promised myself to I'd be back.

Nowadays it's the wineries and resorts industry, not water temperature and clarity that dictates the pace of life around here. Looking for a room around Guerneville on the internet, I couldn't help but notice the region is extremely gay freindly. "We have a dog, are pets allowed?"
"I'm sorry no they're not."
"Well what if I told you my dog is gay, would that help?"
"No pets allowed sir"
"OK OK! I get the message. And for the record my dog is straight."

Not many places in this world prettier than the Northern California coast. Used to spend a lot of time at Gualala (Anchor Bay area) and a little hidden place called Usal beach off Hwy. 1 just before it joins the 101. You ever get up that way let me know, I'll give you the secret directions.

Thanks for reminding me what's in our backyards. Sometimes I forget the beauty just 30 minutes away from "home" . Looks like some Hog Island oysters were enjoyed by Mrs. Sepulveda - happy trails!

Thanks Johnny the north coast reminds me of the desert for some reason. Maybe it's just all the open space and interesting people.

Davo, you should see Murphy dance when I jingle that harness for his walk. Gets up on his hind legs and hops around the room.

Oysters were great. Burritos and tacos at Guerrero's in Pacifica...sublime just not that picturesque. Take it easy Jordan, see you at a concert soon probably.

Sorry for being so late duggy. A steelhead is an andronymous rainbow trout. Unlike a regular rainbow these guys are born in freshwater then drift back downstream to the ocean where they grow to salmon proportions. They return to the stream of their birth to spawn but unlike salmon they don't die they just drift back down to the sea. Beauti inspiring fish.

Thanks Reno, I love these little pieces of knowledge, sounds as if the steehead has got it made. Would love to see a rainbow the size of a salmon!
