In a career that has spanned two decades, Simon Alpin has earned a
reputation as one of Britain's most sought after musicians. He's
played with the likes of Teenage Fanclub, Willard Grant
Conspiracy, M.Ward and, more recently, Devendra Banhart and
The Last Town Chorus. Meanwhile, his production skills – honed
under the tutelage of Dave Stewart at the former Eurythmics
frontman's north London studios – have found him in constant
demand for a host of projects, including the aforementioned Willard
Grant Conspiracy's critically acclaimed Regard The End LP (Alpin
also co-wrote many of that album's key tracks) and Danny Wilson's
Famous Mad Mile.
The groundwork for On The Wire began immediately after the
Regard The End sessions in Slovenia drew to a close in 2003. Due to
to the nomadic nature of many of the musicians featured, it was not
until a year later that they were finally able to re-group in London to
complete the basic recordings... and with overdubs being laid down
in between tours in a variety of studios, it was another twelve
months before the album was completed.
The eagerly awaited results showcase Simon's skills as a musician,
as well as his previously unrecognised talent as a composer and
arranger. These songs combine a mature beauty with an invigorating
charm that will surely force him out from the shadows and on to the
centre of a stage he's so long given up to others.
